Movember has come to an end and today Steve has finally shaved his 'stash.

He did his fundraiser to honor the memory of his dear friend Cory Trepanier who sadly passed away in early November.

Movember started in 2003 as two mates from Australia, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, jokingly decided to bring back in fashion the moustache by convincing their friends to grow one.

Inspired by a friend's mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they associated the moustache with the pink ribbon, but for men.

Movember fundraisers are a global community of fired up Mo Bros and Mo Sisters making a difference in creating awareness about prostate and testicular cancer also mental health and suicide prevention.

Truth and Reconciliation

Benson Steel would like to acknowledge the land on which we gather, and which we operate, is part of the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit.

For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples inhabited and cared for this land, and continue to do so today.

In particular we acknowledge the territory of the Anishinabek, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Ojibway/Chippewa peoples; the land that
is home to the Metis; and most recently, the territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation who are direct descendants of the Mississaugas of the Credit.

We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land, and by doing so, give our respect to its first inhabitants

Nancy and Joe are back!

The very own Benson Steel Canada geese residents are back.

Over the last few years a pair of birds have chosen the parking lot of our office as their breeding grounds.

We had to be careful as once the nest has eggs the male becomes quite aggressive.

This year however one of them got injured and they did not build a nest.

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website, breading season for Canada geese is between February and April. Geese mate once a year.

Canada geese have elaborate courtship behaviors. They mate for life remaining together throughout the years.

Canada geese return to the same nesting sites every year.

The female creates a nest by making a depression in the ground. The male goose stands to guard a short distance away to protect his mate and the eggs.

Canada geese lay between four and nine eggs per year. The average is five. The female lays one egg every one to two days.

Eggs are incubated by the goose (female). She leaves the nest only briefly each day to feed.

Eggs hatch after 25 to 30 days of incubation. The young, called goslings, can walk, swim, and feed within 24 hours.

Parents take their goslings to the water to feed almost immediately after birth. The day after the goslings hatch, the parents take them to a brooding area, where they are raised with other families in a group called a crèche.

In the past couple of weeks Joe appeared to be badly injured. We even thought it would be final. However he has been slowly recovering and he stuck around.

As President and CEO of Benson Steel I am very pleased and proud to announce Benson Steel Limited has completed our first IHSA COR audit and, after review, we have been presented our OFFICIAL COR Accreditation by IHSA.

Certificate of Recognition (COR) is an accreditation program. It verifies that a construction-related company’s health and safety program has reached a national standard. In Ontario, Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA) offers the Certificate of Recognition.

Any company that wants to do business with COR™ certified companies can be assured that:

The company has reduced the risks of injuries and accidents appreciably.
Moreover, COR™ certified companies will possess a health and safety management system, which they develop, assess, and audit annually.

This is another step on our continuing journey to zero incidents every day, both in our manufacturing facility and project sites. I would like to congratulate our Safety Manager, Mr. Ken Robertson, for his lead role in overseeing this submission. I would also like to acknowledge the Benson Health and Safety Committee, our employees and stakeholder partners for all their hard work on this endeavour. Congratulations all!

Pickering Casino

Our wonderful steel workers have been making the pieces for the construction of the Pickering Casino for quite a few months and working hard to make them exactly as it should be. One ordinary day at the shop some of the the pieces made for this project, were aligned and being detailed and given the finishes needed. A few pictures of that moment were taken and without a second thought they were used for purposes completely unrelated to this project.

A few weeks ago while visiting the construction site of this project I noticed the pieces that I remembered being made at the shop. It was exciting to see how everything I have only seen at the shop was taking shape! I took pictures of the structure erected and came back to the office. I realized that most of the time our men and women that produce this pieces do not have the opportunity to see the results of their work displayed like that.

Its like that expression of “I can’t see the forrest for the trees” meaning they are involved in creating the individual pieces and their details and once the pieces are shipped, it is rare to see them erected before the rest of the building falls on the steel structure.

It was with certain pride and a lot of pleasure then, that I put together this poster that shows their work being erected and their pieces in place.

We are proud of being known for the quality of our work and this is a great example:

Benson Steel: Working together through COVID-19

One of the most common issues that one can read on every social media outlet about the current pandemic has to do with the uncertainty of what can, could or should happen.

We are grateful that our government officials acted decisively and set protocols and established orders that have been effective in our fight against COVID-19.

At Benson Steel decisions had been made that created an effective set of safety protocols to protect all workers within the company at all times and that has therefore brought the sense of security to all employees and stakeholders.

When Benson Steel made the decisions of what actions were to be taken to deal with COVID-19 a strong support system for all the staff was created. We all have followed the directions, of our executive, we have been supportive of each other and remained flexible to the ever changing challenges.

We have created protocols within Benson to support our Governments guidelines; adapted and created new protocols to protect not only our stakeholders but also our community.

As Brian Machado, Manager of the Estimating team put it: “At Benson Steel we consider ourselves fortunate to be working at full capacity during these unprecedented times. In the last few months we’ve seen the landscape of our own lives and the industry change, and for the safety of all people we’ve had to adapt on the fly”.

The result of all the measures has been that the shop has continued to work safely, bringing certainty and stability to the Benson Steel Family, our clients and stakeholders.

Last February 27th, 2020, The Toronto Construction Association had a Ski day at the Craigleith Ski Club in Collingwood where attendants enjoyed a fun day on the beautifully groomed trails with friends and colleagues.

Benson Steel sponsored the breakfast provided that day.
The obvious reasons to do it are there: Brand visibility and targeted audience. However at Benson we are convinced of the value of physical activity as a way to promote and develop healthy communities and preventing a wide range of social issues.
So when the TCA comes up with wonderful initiatives like the Ski day, we have a great opportunity to do our part and stay true to our conviction of being a responsible member of our communities and invest in developing relationships at the same time that we support initiatives that create safe, fun and rewarding ways to spend a day.

Every year on September 30th, people across Canada wear orange and participate in Orange Shirt Day events to recognize and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada.

The Canadian government designated September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, beginning in 2021.
